Three Ways to Control Your Future

One of the most common complaints people have nowadays is that they have no control over their own lives. While that may well be the case, it probably always has been. However, there are different dynamics at work today than there were in the twentieth century, let alone the nineteenth. Whereas the last two centuries saw the self-employed individual being drawn into a relationship with the factory owner as an employee, whether or not he or she wished it to be so, collectivization made that a logical process. From the water power that drew weavers into early Industrial Revolution factories in Great Britain and New England, to the automobile factories that Henry Ford introduced with the revolutionary production line, there was security to be had in the weekly wage.
The Great Crash of 1929 saw the uncertainties of the capitalist system affect the United States in much the same way as such depressions had done to Great Britain in the nineteenth century, but it was only a minor glitch when taken into account with the demands made of industry throughout the world during the Second World War and thereafter during the Cold War.
Perhaps it is with the crumbling away of the Soviet Empire in the early 90s that there was a stock-taking by people in the West and many saw new technology as showing the way to a new and independent future. The power blocs were collapsing - Jugoslavia fell apart, just as East Germany fell and democracy was restored. The republics that had been under Soviet control in Eastern Europe reasserted their right to self-determination and, at the same time, cell phones became smaller and cheaper, the costs of calls became cheaper as the market began to intervene and smaller, laptop computers came onto the market, many using the cell phones to access the new medium of communication; the internet!
Now, with the current recession following the credit crunch, many people are reconsidering their futures:
One - should they return to employment and face the possibility of being made redundant again in the future, or;
Two - should they become self-employed and have the same problem that many small businesses have had to deal with during the same economic turbulence and find that they are squeezed out of business, or;
Three - opt for both solutions. Secure paid employment for the relative security that offers and, at the same time, use the benefits offered by the internet and set up a small business using a website and some advertising (often free these days) to make a little nest egg for any future rainy days.
To see more of this in detail, go to http://www.4-a-job.com which gives you all the tools to secure a salaried job, but which also gives heaps of down-to-earth information sources to set up an online business of your own. (oh - and there's a free book to download when you click on this site. It's called, 'Internet Business for Newbies'). It's yours to keep.

Forging a Twenty-First Century Career

Not long ago, it would have been regarded as foolhardy to have thought about self-employment when there were so many large companies looking for employees. Any major economy in the West had its General Motors, BPs and other, major household names employing tens of thousands world-wide. However, since the Millennium, we have seen these major companies shedding huge numbers of jobs and selling off subsidiaries. Many well-known names have disappeared from the streets and are now history - Arthur Andersen, one of the Big Five international firms of accountants, or Lehmann Brothers, for example.
What lessons can we draw from this? We still need to pay our bills. We still need gas for our cars and food to feed our families, don't we? However, the sea-change which is becoming daily more apparent is that the impetus is now changing direction. Whereas the tide was going towards the creation of huge enterprises in the nineteenth century and, indeed, in the twentieth, there is a difference now. Technology has intervened and has meant that a one-man (or one-woman) band can now have as large a profile on the internet as a larger company run by several people.
Just think about it for a moment. You could still look for a job and have the security of a weekly, or monthly income. If so, then you need expert advice to beat the opposition to the job. That is a sensible course of action to take. Equally, however, you could use that same income to build up a little business of your own. The way that technology is now set up means that you could have a website promoting your company (let's assume that it will sell daffodil bulbs, for the sake of argument) which you grow in your large garden at home. Your website has a business address which you pay $50 a month for and to which your bills and checks get sent. Your phone number is answered by a company five hundred miles away in your company's name and messages are texted to you to call back during your lunch break, or after work. Your invoices are printed off, very professionally on your computer in the spare bedroom at home. Oh, and most of your orders come by email into that business account your pal, who does IT, designed for you for $100.
In the above scenario, you have the best of both worlds. You have the relative security of paid employment, backed up with the value-added of your own little niche market business at home, churning away a few hundred dollars a month.
Now, you can check out both of those scenarios by going to: http://www.4-a-job.com to see how you can secure a paid job through training that execs would die for, as well as exploring and downloading information on how to set up your own website, information you can sell on the internet and much, much more.

5 Steps to Become a Game Tester - From Application, to Career!

So you want to be a video game tester, huh? Well beware, because there is a LOT that you have to do and learn before you can even begin to comprehend what a job as a video game tester involves! Luckily, though, you've found this article which will explain the finer points of a video game tester career and help you make it as a game tester. We'll start at the beginning- with the video game tester application and learning what you should know before you jump at a job as a video game tester, and go all the way through till the end so you will learn what you can expect with a video game tester career. Let's get started!
1. First things first, you should know your skills. That means getting to understand what you are already good at in terms of games. Do you play a lot of RPGs, action/adventure games, or are you more of a first person shooter fanatic? Learn your skills so you can identify the best companies to apply for. Mass applying can be detrimental to your health- imagine if you hate puzzle games yet, because you mass applied to companies and only got on at a puzzler you would be forever branded as video game QA tester that specialized in puzzle games! Granted rarely will you be pigeon holed after one job, but don't fall into the trap of thinking past experiences aren't privy to future ones!
2.Learn the lingo- If you don't know what a video game QA tester is, then you should look it up now (hint, the QA stands for "quality assurance tester"). There are a lot of other terms you should familiarize yourself with as well, like general talk about programming and coding and the business aspect of gaming too, like what development cycles correspond to what pre release phase.
3. Get extra experience. Everyone and their brother who wants a video game tester career will be ambling for it without learning anything other than how to play games. The only way to really stand out is to work hard to learn how to do something aside from play games. A lot of the times a quality assurance tester will end up being an intern on another part of the development team, especially in today's economy, simply because if you were already on the development staff then you must know how to code at least slightly. If you learn C++ or other programming languages you'll be in a much better shape than someone who hasn't even begun college.
4.Adjust your expectations. You may have been told that you can sit at home and test games for a living, and while it's true you could eventually find an at home video game testing position, probably beta testing computer games, you should first realize those aren't paid half the time (usually they are for online games that are going to be released, like Final Fantasy XIV and are open to public), and definitely as handsomely paid as the testing center positions. Also, you aren't usually paid on a per hour basis if you have a game tester career, so all the crock about $50 per hour is inaccurate. Instead you'll usually get a lump sum calculated based on the time spent in days or weeks (sometimes months and years) testing.
5. Fill out the application with style! Don't put cookie cutter responses you think "they want to hear" on your video game tester application. Make it nice and juicy and include a powerful background on your experiences. Be sure to be accurate and personable, but just don't sound like you're bragging either. You'll be able to find the fine line if you work at it enough.
So, do you think you're ready for a video game tester career? Don't be so sure; about 70% of the people who try to become a tester crap out! Click here to avoid being one of them and insure you have a fair chance at a video game tester career!

Six Strategies For Dealing With Unexpected Job Termination

With over 15 million people unemployed in the USA in late 2009, many people have been faced with unexpected job termination. It is a very rare situation when it is welcome news to learn you are unemployed, but in some circumstances the situation may result in opening a new door of opportunity.
Opportunities for new careers, training, retraining, and career counseling are likely available within the resources of your state or county, local colleges or workforce centers. Sometimes we just need to be reminded to look for new options. This article provides six strategies that people can consider to help cope with unexpected job termination.
  1. File and Freshen. In the face of sudden employment, of course the first step of self-preservation is to register for unemployment. However we must remember not to stop there. Instead, individuals with initiative will want to immediately begin looking for opportunities to refresh their skills, update their resume and interview skills even while beginning their job hunt.
  2. Upgrade or New Direction. If you have been searching for jobs for a few weeks and are not having luck finding a new position, it may be an opportunity to consider a career upgrade or new career direction. The state or county Workforce Centers, or One Stops, as they are often called, will have career advising services which may assist in such valuable roles as career aptitude testing, and career preferences evaluations. You might also consider whether your career aspirations and goals have shifted since you were last hired. Maybe this is a chance for significant change of direction. If career change seems promising, there are many resources for retraining.
  3. Outlooks on Occupations. Occupational profiles, demands and salaries are listed in an easily searchable database at Occupational Outlook Handbook (see link in resource list below). Using this online resource you can explore the occupations which have surfaced as you moved through the previous steps. In addition, be sure to access not just national statistics, but also statewide and county data which are linked to this same resource.
  4. Short-term Retraining. Watch out that you are not deceived by the myth of lengthy retraining. Many people may be concerned that retraining is a lengthy process. Instead, workplace experts suggest that adults pursue short term certifications (30-day to 6 month certifications) due to the rapidly changing economy and workplace demands. Consider the opportunity that awaits you to upgrade your skills or enter a new field with just 1-2 months of certification before immediate placement in the workplace to see if the career is what you really enjoy. At this point, one has a much better vantage point to make an informed choice about pursuing degree study, if needed, to further advance a new career.
  5. Qualified Programs. The OCO and state databases will also link job seekers to training programs related to each occupation. It is important to verify that the program you investigate will fulfill any possible requirements for a state based extension of your unemployment. (Please note that this option is not available in all states.) In New Jersey, for instance, traditional unemployment benefits may be extended up to 6 months for continuing your education in a qualifying educational program: specific bachelor's degrees or high demand trade degrees. In most states which offer this extension, it is not an automatic extension. Instead, unemployed people must meet with a counselor, apply for this benefit, and wait for approval.
  6. VA Opportunities. If the job seeker is a military veteran, check with the veterans' administration to see what benefits are available to support your job hunt and/or retraining. Basic veterans' educational benefits are substantial, but there are new benefits which have recently been made available. Check your your local VA office and also the online resources listed below.

Careers at the CIA

With the economy in the toilet and with many large and small companies imposing a hiring freeze until there is a better understanding on what the economic future holds for them, there seems to be little opportunity for young people just finishing college; that is unless they are considering a career with the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA). From personal experience (I served with the CIA for seven years) it is a great place to work and one of the most exciting careers one could wish for. The downside is the difficultly of living a 'normal' life if you are posted overseas, not seeing family and friends much and having to perform tasks that you might not totally be comfortable with. The rewards of serving your country and meeting interesting and extremely intelligent people outweighed the negatives for me.
The almost ten year old 'war on terror' has meant a boom for some US Government agencies, such as the CIA. The need for a diversity of people with many different types of skills is in great demand at CIA and many young people may be overlooking the opportunities available to them in the government employment sector. Many people may hold the notion that working for the US Government is a boring and unfulfilling career path (and in some government agencies this is in fact true) but this is not the case for working at the CIA.
The CIA or the 'Agency' (as many people in the intelligence community call it) is an independent US Government Agency responsible for gathering and providing intelligence necessary for national security. Raw intelligence is gathered in many different ways, including through the National Clandestine Service through running human intelligence assets HUMINT), agents or spies. The raw intelligence goes through a process of analysis and then winds-up in the hands of senior US policymakers who use this intelligence (and additional information and factors) as part of the decision making process on the direction to take towards a specific country or region of the world. The main mission, however, is to provide national security for the citizens of the United States.
The CIA is separated into four basic components called directorates and depending on your interests, education, abilities and personal convictions, the opportunities that exist at each directorate are as diverse as the people who work for them. The four directorates include:
• The Directorate of Intelligence
• The National Clandestine Service
• Directorate of Science & Technology
• The Directorate of Support.
In addition to the four directorates listed above the CIA also employs staff that deal with human resources, legal issues, public affairs, internal operation oversight, information management, mission innovation, accounting and congressional affairs.
About CIA
The Central Intelligence Agency was created in 1947 with the signing of the National Security Act by President Harry S. Truman. The act also created a Director of Central Intelligence (DCI) to serve as head of the United States intelligence community; act as the principal adviser to the President for intelligence matters related to the national security; and serve as head of the Central Intelligence Agency. The Intelligence Reform and Terrorism Prevention Act of 2004 amended the National Security Act to provide for a Director of National Intelligence who would assume some of the roles formerly fulfilled by the DCI, with a separate Director of the Central Intelligence Agency.
The function of the Central Intelligence Agency is to assist the Director of the Central Intelligence Agency in carrying out the responsibilities outlined above.
To accomplish its mission, the CIA engages in research, development, and deployment of high-leverage technology for intelligence purposes. As a separate agency, CIA serves as an independent source of analysis on topics of concern and also works closely with the other organizations in the Intelligence Community to ensure that the intelligence consumer-whether Washington policymaker or battlefield commander-receives the best intelligence possible.
As changing global realities have reordered the national security agenda, CIA has met these challenges by:
• Creating special, multidisciplinary centers to address such high-priority issues such as nonproliferation, counterterrorism, counterintelligence, international organized crime and narcotics trafficking, environment, and arms control intelligence.
• Forging stronger partnerships between the several intelligence collection disciplines and all-source analysis.
• Taking an active part in Intelligence Community analytical efforts and producing all-source analysis on the full range of topics that affect national security.
• Contributing to the effectiveness of the overall Intelligence Community by managing services of common concern in imagery analysis and open-source collection and participating in partnerships with other intelligence agencies in the areas of research and development and technical collection.
By emphasizing adaptability in its approach to intelligence collection, the CIA can tailor its support to key intelligence consumers and help them meet their needs as they face the issues of the post-Cold War World.
How to Apply
In order to apply for a job or career path at CIA, such as the Career Trainee Program or CT Program, you must have a minimum of a four-year college degree; a master's degree is preferred. If you speak a second language, such as Arabic, your chances of at least getting an initial interview go up substantially. The CIA is extremely picky in hiring new employees. The employment process takes about one year and includes several interviews with director level people at the different directorates, a psychological and drug screening, a medical exam and if all goes well a polygraph that includes a security and personal life screening.
If accepted into the CT Program you will get a year of training at Camp Perry (AKA, The Farm) while the security people perform a background check for a security clearance. It is a long process and extremely tedious, but if you make it in it will be the most interesting career you can imagine. You can start the process by initially going to the CIA's website at: http://WWW.CIA.Gov there you will find official information about applying the CIA for employment.

Green Franchises Create Green Jobs

Even with all of the hype and press that the green sector has received, green jobs still only account for approximately 0.49% of all of the employment in the United States. The bright side is that the green job sector is outpacing the economy in terms of growth. In the period between 1998 and 2007, while the economy grew 3.7%, the green job market grew 9.1 percent.
Recent research has shown that these jobs are typically well-paying and durable when compared to other industries. Levels of job satisfaction are also extremely high, as people are realizing that they're contributing to the bigger picture of saving the environment. With all of these factors in play, we need to focus on creating more green jobs!
An analysis of the green industry shows that green jobs take many forms. In most cases, professionals are simply adapting their existing skills to a new industry (engineers, electricians, and mechanics). In some instances, individuals are making complete career changes that require from-the-ground-up-training (many of these are in the energy consulting space).
In both scenarios, the green franchise model functions as a wonderful incubator for new people entering the industry. Any well-formed green franchise will not only include a training program for the individual that is buying into the franchise, but a program for the employees that the person subsequently hires. These programs (often online, and typically ongoing), are the ideal platform for creating the next wave of green jobs.
My challenge to everyone who is considering a career change into the green industry is to get involved in a green franchise or business opportunity. Take advantage of the built-in processes, support systems, and training that comes along with a green franchise, and be a job creator, not an employee!
With the training programs and support systems included in many green franchises, we can work together to create the new green-collar economy.

It's Not Easy Being Blue, Brown and Green - Who is Needed For Environmental and Water Industry Jobs

Blue, brown and green are the colors of water, contaminated land and restored land. The job opportunities available in these markets are well paying and cannot be off-shored due to national security concerns. However, a major problem exists for the environmental and water industry companies: there are not enough Americans willing pursue these jobs because they are not glamorous and highly technical. Who wants to use math and science everyday, right? I hope you see it differently. If you are a job seeker who has the right skills and knowledge you will get hired immediately when the projects start up. Here is some information which may be helpful.
The stimulus package has $6 billion set aside for each state's Clean Water and Drinking Water State Revolving Funds to "promote clean water and ensure safe drinking water ". These funds are used by the states to build and improve water and wastewater infrastructure in cities and rural communities. The jobs connected to these projects require certifications or degrees in construction management, engineering and water plant operations. Let me turn your attention to a good opportunity.
Water/wastewater treatment plant operators are in high demand due to the large numbers of people retiring from the field. Each state has its own certification program and requirements but job seekers who have mechanical knowledge and a college degree may have a distinct edge over candidates who do not.
The EPA has an appropriation of $100 million dollars dedicated to environmental remediation and restoration programs. Environmental remediation and restoration is the process of cleaning contaminated commercial and industrial land (or brownfields) to a useful and functional state (one of the most successful industrial remediation and restoration sites is Atlanta's Atlantic Station where an old steel factory was turned into a green based commercial area). There are many contaminated buildings and factories around the country where chemicals and heavy metals are slowly seeping into the soil and water.
Before these contaminated sites can be restored, environmental scientists, engineers, real estate development professionals and remedial contractors will evaluate the contamination and design a cleanup plan to restore the land to "clean" status. Other professionals in the field of environmental forensics, toxicology and chemistry will be needed to assist in evaluation and legal matters.
If you are a job seeker interested in environmental remediation and restoration or the water industry make sure that you get the right education and certifications to increase your chance of getting a position. You will be glad you did.

Beer Girls Have the Best Job During a Bad Economy and Get Paid to Have Fun

Can you imagine having the time of your life and getting paid to promote a major beer? Beer Girls are the sexy ingredients that are not listed on a bottle of beer. They are the life of the party when added to a consumers beer drinking experience.
Becoming a beer girl for a major brand such as Miller lite or Bud Light is a dream job for any girl over the age of 21.
These attractive girls are getting paid over $30 per hour to communicate to consumers the qualities of the beer they are promoting.
How to Become a Beer Promotional Model
You must have the ability to entertain and persuade a male consumer to purchase the beer you are promoting. Just like Victoria Secret models are required to sell more sexy lingerie for Victoria Secrets, a Miller Girl is being paid to sell more beer for Miller Brewing company.
- You must be over the age of 21 and not look younger than 21
- You must have an attractive body and be in great shape
In order for a Beer Girl to be effective, she must know every great attribute about the beverage she is promoting. She needs to know why her beer is better than the beer the consumer is drinking. Just because a girl is hot is not reason alone to get a man to stop drinking a beer he has always enjoyed.
Beer Companies such as MillerCoors and Budweiser target young male consumers between the ages of 21-27 because they are more likely to be persuaded to try different beers. They are not yet brand loyal and are still in the phase of just drinking any beer that is popular.
Beer companies are positioning their beers as the popular and fun beer. Beer Girls are just the foam on a great draft beer. They are able to stick on the minds of young male consumers more than a cheesy commercial.

Have you seen how much fun these promo girls get to have when they are in the bars or special events?
They walk around as if they were celebrities because almost every guy with a camera phone is trying to capture their image.
We all know they are sexy, cool and fun to be around but did you know they get paid because they are brand communicators.
Beer companies pay them a lot of money per hour because they are able to deliver their brands message in a a compelling way that converts them to drink their beer.
Becoming a Promo Girl is not easy nor is it that hard. I have hired hundreds of promotional models and they all have different looks and qualities. The major quality they must have is the ability to hold a conversation.
They must be able to speak about the qualities and attributes of the beverage they are promoting.
Promo girls are no different than high paid supermodels except that they may get more attention from guys because they are the sexy girls next door that every guy wants to date.

Promo Models Make Great Money Promoting Fortune 500 Company Products

Becoming a Promo model for a major beverage company will give you the financial security you need and make your life more interesting.
Major beverage companies have been spending millions of dollars to promote their brands to male consumers.
These companies have realized that in order to deliver their brands message to a male consumer, they need to first grab his attention. Since the day god created eve, attractive women have always been the best way to grab a guys attention.
Now that these attractive promo girls have the guys attention, they must be able to communicate the brands message in a way that the guy will not forget.
Promo girls use the art of seduction when speaking to their targeted male consumers. They first entertain him with their looks and then speak in a sexy manner why he should be drinking the beer she is promoting.
The promotional beer girls that I work with in Hollywood are masters at getting a guy to do what they want.
They love the attention and compliments they get and the power they feel after they convert a bud light drinker into a miller lite drinker.
An attractive female that is confident is extremely seductive to men. There is nothing more pleasurable than to be around a promo girl that is able to control you. They control you in a pleasing and teasing way that is hard for any man to resist.
Even thought the male consumers know that they are being persuaded to try another beer, they will listen and obey just to please the promo girl.
Do you think you have what it takes to become a promo girl and make great money while having a great time?

Travel Nursing Positions Require a License

While the national unemployment rate is expected to rise well above 10 percent, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics expects travel nurse positions will increase over the next seven years. This can make anyone consider employment as a travel nurse, but before that can happen one has to obtain a nursing license from the state board of nursing where they will practice.
The National Council of State Boards of Nursing is a non-profit organization that coordinates the regulatory powers of the various state and territorial nursing boards. According to the NCSBN, before a person can apply to a state board of nursing for a nursing license and fill a travel nurse position one must graduate from a state-approved nursing program, pass the National Council Licensure Examination, NCLEX, and must self-report any criminal convictions, chemical dependencies and functional ability deficits.
Nursing program candidates have thousands of traveling nursing opportunities throughout America, but the minimum requirements are a high school diploma or GED and CPR certificate. Candidates must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents and provide proof of immunization against common illnesses. If a person has a post-secondary background, then college transcripts must be submitted. If a prospective nurse is a non-native English speaker, then he or she must pass an English test. Many nursing programs require an essay explaining the reasons why the candidate wants to enter the nursing field as part of their admission requirements. Each of the requirements is scored which, when combined with the other requirements, will determine whether or not the person is accepted into the program, gets placed on a waiting list or is rejected.
Even though positions as travel nurses are plentiful in America due to the nurse shortage, nursing programs are still highly competitive. There is an over abundance of students who apply every year to nursing programs, but enough nursing educators available. Therefore nursing and travel nurse positions have become highly competitive. Because there is such a high demand for nurses, hospitals and other healthcare employers have increased the salaries and benefits for nurses well above what most schools can afford to pay nurse educators. This makes nurse educators a hard to find and retain for nursing schools. To increase one's chances of getting accepted into a nursing program one should try to get healthcare experience in a clinical or hospital setting.
When a candidate is accepted into a nursing program he or she has to take and pass courses in anatomy and physiology, microbiology, chemistry, psychology, lifespan human growth and development, English and math.
When students graduate from nursing school, nursing candidates cannot fill a travel nurse position yet until she or he passes the NCLEX, which is a standardized exam that each state board of nursing uses to determine if the candidate is prepared for entry-level nursing practice and has at least one year of nursing experience. According to the NCSBN, the NCLEX covers:
* Safe, Effective Care Environment
* Management of Care
* Safety and Infection Control
* Promotion and Maintenance
* Growth and Development
* Prevention and Early Detection of Disease
* Psychosocial Integrity
* Coping and Adaptation
* Psychosocial Adaptation
* Physiological Integrity
* Basic Care and Comfort
* Pharmacological and Potential Therapies
* Reduction of Risk Potential
* Physiological Adaptation
The NCLEX is a computerized exam that is administered by the NCSBN. RN candidates need to answer a minimum of 75 questions and LPN candidates a minimum of 85 questions. When the minimum numbers of questions are answered, the computer will determine if the tester has passed; if not, the tester is allowed to continue onward until they reach the maximum number of questions. An RN candidate has 265 questions maximum and a LPN candidate has 205 questions maximum for the test. All candidates have five hours to take the test, but are given two short breaks during the test time. Candidates can retake the test as many times as needed as long as they allow 91 days pass before retaking the test.
The next step toward obtaining a license and filling a travel nurse position is reporting all criminal convictions, chemical dependencies and functional ability deficits to the state board of nursing. This can be easiest or the hardest part of the license application process depending on the applicant. It is highly recommended to be honest.
The final step of obtaining a license is sending in the application to the state board of nursing. The application processing time on average is 30 to 35 days from the date the board receives the application.
Molly Harris is the President and CEO at Advantage Medical Staffing, Inc., where she actively seeks candidates to fill travel nurse positions throughout the U.S. Advantage Medical specializes in career placement for travel nurses, per diem staff and allied professionals, and permanent placement nurses.

How to Answer the Interview Question - "Tell Me About Yourself"

Almost all interviewers these days begin with this question "Tell me about yourself." They do this for a several reasons, the most important of which is to see how the interviewee handled him/herself in an unprompted or an undefined situation. Moreover, they do it to judge their eloquence, confidence and the type of impression they would make on the people with whom they would have to deal with in the future.
Most candidates are afraid of this question and find it difficult to answer. This is a wrong conception, it should rather be taken as an opportunity to expose yourself positively and highlight your strengths. This has become a popular, inevitable question these days. So be prepared to deal with it.
Replying to this question by saying, "What do you want to know?" is equal to a job-suicide. This shows you are unprepared for the interview and hence your lack of enthusiasm for the job. Another mistake people make, is thinking the interviewer wants to know about them as a person. They start saying things like I was born in Houston, and my father was a...' It's totally wrong. The interviewer is only concerned about whether you can do the job or not, how well you will fit in the organization, what are your accomplishments in life and what and how did you do in your prior jobs. Hence you need to be well prepared for the answer.
Almost all coaches agreed that that the following two points should be kept in mind while answering the question, 'tell me about yourself': "Focus on what would interests the interviewer" and "Emphasize over your most important accomplishments". It is recommended that you start with your most recent employment and explaining why you are well qualified for the position. Sell yourself to the buyer who is the interviewer in this case.
So tell me about yourself" response should directly fit the interests of your prospective employer." While making your accomplishments prominent in the interview, many coaches advise to tell a memorable story about your achievements or personality. For example, if you tell an interviewer that people think of you as strong-willed, provide a brief story that shows how you have been persistent in achieving your goals. Stories are powerful, interesting and remembered.
Most importantly keep your answers brief and captivating. The interviewer wants to know a little bit about you not your entire life story. Just offer up two or three things that are interesting and relevant. A minute to answer it would be ideal. Rather than fearing this question, a candidate should welcome it. As a well prepared answer would let the candidate take over the interview and set the tone which would allow them to answer questions they are willing to answer.

Paralegal Certificate Programs - Are They Really Needed to Become a Paralegal?

Are you looking into joining the paralegal profession but wonder if you need to graduate from one of those paralegal certificate programs to do so? Many people in this position wonder whether this is the case. Paralegals are one of the most essential roles within the operations of most every law firm. As we've previously posted, paralegals carry many responsibilities that enable attorneys they work for to carry out their role servicing clients in court, as well as, acquiring more clients.
It is recommended by the National Federation of Paralegal Association recommends a bachelor's degree for those wanting to become a paralegal, only about 50% of existing paralegals have one according to a 2001 national survey. However, for those that want to really compete in this job market going forward, a paralegal certificate is fast becoming the standard requirement. Law firms are like any other company, and with the current economic conditions and tight job market, a certificate will at least give you a partial leg up.
It is important to make sure whatever paralegal certificate program you enroll in is approved by the American Bar Association (ABA). This is increasingly important since most attorneys will require it, and it will be one of the first questions they'll ask you during an interview. Typically, you'll need a bachelor's degree, understanding of legal ethics, vocabulary and experience to enroll. Depending on the program, they may even require a minimum GPA, but this is not the norm.
Take note that if you do not have a paralegal certificate, you'll still be able to get a job as one in any state except California, you'll just have to make up for less credentials through experience working in a legal capacity of some sort, or you'll have to otherwise impress the interviewing attorneys.
Two organizations currently grant paralegal certificates. The National Association of Legal Assistants (NALA), and the National Federation of Paralegal Associates (NFPA). Both require certification through passage of an exam, but have differing overall requirements. The NFPA requires a bachelor's degree with at least 2 years paralegal experience.

5 Steps to Using Linkedin For a Successful Job Search

There is no doubt that LinkedIn is widely used in the business community as a type of "online resume." Anyone that has conducted a successful LinkedIn job search can tell you, it's so much more than that. It's a powerful tool to reach out to your industry in a new and credible way. Follow these steps and you'll be one step closer to making strong connections to employers and industry recruiters on LinkedIn.
Step 1: Complete Your Profile
Your profile is like your online resume, only better, because people can endorse your work right on your profile. If you haven't fully completed your profile, you aren't giving anyone enough information to determine if you are a person they would want to share networks with. You are asking for people to open their rolodex to you, so to speak. You must have a complete profile that shows them you are worthy networking partner.
Profile description with personality- this is the place where you need to sell yourself. Think "cover letter meets 30 second elevator pitch."
List all positions- Listing all your past positions allows the system to find more people who you may already know or who have a workplace or school in common. LinkedIn suggests people to network with based on information in your profile.
Education- For the same reason, list all the schools you attended. It may seem silly to list your high school in a resume, but LinkedIn is different. Since it uses this information to help bring people together, it's important to include everything. You never know where your fellow classmates ended up that may help your career.
Recommendations- Endorsements are always important. LinkedIn is no exception. Ask people from each sector of your worklife to endorse the work you did when they knew you. Make sure you get clients, bosses, employees, vendors, etc.
Link to Website- You can provide up to 3 websites that relate to your work, either an online resume or your website if you have one, or one that you worked on.
SEO your profile- Always think "keywords, keywords, keywords" in everything you do online. Make sure you that are using the same words when you write your profile that someone would use to search for someone like you.
LinkedIn Applications- Utilize the applications that are relevant, integrating blogs, presentations, etc.
Step 2: Reach Out - Build Your Network
When you make a first level connection with someone, it means you know them directly. When you connect with someone, you gain a broader reach than just that person because all of the people that they know are now part of your network as 2nd level connections. Similarly, all of the second level's connections now become your third level connections. What all this means is that you can exponentially grow your network by making smart connections to people you already know or strategic people in your industry.
Building your network is helpful if you want to ask an industry question to your connections. Your entire network is posed the question, so the more people you are connected to the more brains you are reaching. When you get ready to search jobs, the broader your network is, the greater your access to jobs posted by your network.
Connect to people you already know- Import your address book to see who you know that is already on LinkedIn. Reach out to colleagues, friends, classmates, vendors, etc.
Strategic new connections- See who your connections know. Do you also know them? Should you know them? If so, invite them to connect with a personal message of why it would be beneficial for them to share networks with you.
Step 3: Build Credibility
LinkedIn's Answers section is a great way to build your industry credibility in your online community. If you have strategically connected with people in your industry, they will see your posed questions, or see that you have answered questions and come to realize that you are someone who has something meaningful to contribute. This can help you in a job search, or for general industry networking.
Step 4: Research
Once your profile has been built and you have begun your quest for online industry credibility, you are ready to start searching for positions posted by people in your network.
Search Jobs

The link to download the tool is located at the bottom of each LinkedIn page.
Companies Section
This section of LinkedIn contains information about various companies whose employees are on LinkedIn. It will show you who is in your network at that company, who has recently been hired or promoted there and will list their open positions. It also shows you where people who work there used to work, and where they went after they worked there. Knowing what's up at a company is important for networking your way in.
Step 5: Request Introductions
When you are ready, you can request an introduction to someone in a company that either has an opening, or one that you wish you target. Professionally request the introduction, letting them know why it would benefit the receiver to know you, so the referrer feels confident in making the introduction. Make sure you have something to contribute. If it's all about you, there is a chance your request will be ignored. Once the introduction has been made, be sure to thank the referrer. Make contact with the person and show them why connecting with you is a great career move for you both.
Get Started!
Now you are well on your way to a successful job search via LinkedIn. Be sure to commit time and effort to growing and maintaining your network. Top Five Tricks to Get Promoted This Month

Is life great? The nine to five grind is no fun if you're the average Joe.
First, you don't own your time. Rather than vacationing in Aruba, you're making coffee for the evil boss. Second, the pay tends to be paltry. Seriously- can you live of just $2000 a month? That would barely pay the rent- or a hot date. And third... corporate life often entails slugging it out in a den of snakes. How enjoyable is it to work with backbiters, intruigers, money grubbers and insane management.
Bottomline is, the corporate life isn't a cakewalk, particularly if you're at the bottom of the rung. But who says you have to be at the bottom of the food chain? You can remain there for life- or you can BE the boss. Corporate success is a matter of choice, not random fate. You can be the big shot with just the right moves. Here are the top five ways to get to the top with minimal effort:
MASTER THE ART OF BRAGGING.
Corporate executive coaches Steve Nielson and Dr. Joseph Plazo assert that humility in the office helps no one. If people don't know your accomplishments, the bosses won't promote you. Hence it's important to brag- but subtly. When you accomplish a daunting task, make sure you announce it by telling people what's in it for THEM by taking advantage of your completed project. This way, you take the edge of the boast.
PASS THE HONOR.
When people love you, they'll toot your horn. It is therefore vital to pass the praise to subordinates and colleagues who helped out. Make sure other people shine because when they do, they'll feel great about you- and they'll make you shine.
ALWAYS BE THE FIRST MOVER.
The boss needs volunteers? Never mind the Saturday night game. Offer to do it! It may be a bummer but he'll remember you next promotion and appraisal day.
APPEAR LIKE AN EXPERT.
Experts don't need to know everything. They simply need to know a tad more than the rest. If you work in a marketing firm, it will be good to invest in a marketing journal. That way, you know cutting edge data that your boss doesn't know. He'll be impressed by your extra know how. Whatever industry you're in, take pains to know trivia in the field. Then raise it in conversations.
GET SOME CREDENTIALS!
Let's face it. A Mister doesn't have the same clout as an MBA, PhD or Engineer. There are schools that let you have the three letters after your name in just six months. With a title, you can accelerate faster than your boss on the corporate ladder. Invest in one today. Within six months, you won't only be an MBA. You'll be THE BOSS!
John Rutherford reveals legal secrets to getting solid academic credentials that get you promoted fast.

Freelance PHP Jobs

The first thing to know about a PHP job is that it has something to do with the internet and designing websites. PHP or Hypertext Processor is a kind of scripting module that helps embed dynamic content on web pages, making them more interactive and interesting. A PHP professional is usually someone who has an educational background in programming and web designing. These people are responsible for all the well thought out, innovative, and attention-grabbing content that each one of us experience on the web everyday.
Which brings us to the question that if you were a PHP professional what kind of a job would you be in? Typically, you would have to design web pages for the online websites of your clients - which would involve scripting in PHP (of course) and HTML; and putting together a lot of graphics, text, and other data formats. You would be working either alone or in a team, with your workload chalked out. You would be credited of your work and be able to cite the projects in your bio-data. And you could be either working for a firm - which would fish projects for you and allocate them to you as per your standing and pay you a fixed salary according to your workload and quality - or you could freelance.
Freelancing as a PHP professional is a viable career option with many takers and excellent opportunities for growth. As a freelancer, you would be able to select your own projects, and sometimes, even your own team. You would get to choose your own timings and take part in setting up the contract with your client. These contracts would ideally be very short term contracts in which you get the rough sketch of the product to be put up, which you deliver within a stipulated period.
It is needless to underscore the importance of a website for any company, government body or organization. Thus, PHP professionals - especially good ones - are constantly in demand. Companies put up ads in papers and on the net - numerous forums on the net act as platforms for PHP professionals to meet and interact with potential clients. It is essential that you remain alert at all times - a single visit to any one such freelance PHP forum is enough to give you an idea of the competition out there. As a PHP freelancer, you would have to keep up to date on the latest in web developing tools and keep evolving with the times - a never-ending process of constantly being in the loop and staying ahead of the pack.
A creative streak, along with the solid foundation in computer programming and web developing, is essential to come up with out-of-the-box results appealing to the public and your clients. Although PHP professionals are aplenty, only a few deliver offbeat products that catch the eye and captivate your mind. More often than not, a good PHP freelancer can expect to earn as much as an average pay package offered by a web designer firm to PHP professionals. If you are good at multitasking, taking up several projects simultaneously, and are good at meeting deadlines - freelancing as a PHP person is the right way to go for you.
Even though PHP professionals may freelance to gain more freedom and more money for their efforts, freelancing is not as sweet as it sounds. There are a lot of setbacks when you are a freelancer in the tech business. First, you have no fallbacks. A slight depression in the economy induces a horrible slump in the market and you find it hard to nail a project. There aren't any medical benefits, bonuses, or retirement contingencies - you are on your own and if anything goes wrong, you have to fetch for yourself. And, of course, the competition is ruthless and without mercy.
A freelancing PHP job comes with thorns attached, but it is sensible to be well informed of the collaterals before jumping into it first. Once you have an idea of what you are in for, you can take measures and prepare yourself for the worst, if it comes to that. Web designing involves creativity - no doubt - and if your firm is stifling it, then you have a good alternative as a freelance PHP professional.
With the increasing accpetance of freelance jobs as careers, it has opened new avenues for professionals from all streams especially online PHP Jobs allowing professionals to work from home and make money online.

Freelance Engineering Jobs

A degree in engineering has always been a sure way of getting hefty pay packages in the previous century, irrespective of the particular stream. Engineers are the sculptors who have molded the modern day world out of rocks and sand. Even though specific trends in the demand of the particular type of engineering may vary - as is the case that if software engineers are in demand today, mechanical and civil engineers may be in demand tomorrow - it is presumable that the demand for a well-qualified engineer is never going to slow down.
Hence, it is not surprising that a significant fraction of the engineers work on a freelance basis, as is the case of most professions today, such journalism, architects, writers, and web designers, to cite a few examples. This is even truer for certain specific branches of engineering, such as software engineering, civil engineering, and bioengineering.
Government bodies and corporate bodies from different streams hunt for well-qualified engineers to undertake all sorts of projects. The ambit of projects might include almost anything, from constructing a model for making a car accident proof (production engineering), to smaller and faster bluetooth modules (electronic and communications engineering), to a 4-cylinder gasoline operated engine (automobile engineering) to a PLC program for mobile devices (software engineering) to the construction of a small bridge (civil engineering). The particular thread that connects all of these projects is all of them are short term, small-scale projects - perfect for a freelance engineer who likes to work on a contract basis without being associated with firms or companies in a long-term deal.
The duration of the contract for a freelance engineer may be anything from a few months to a few years - depending on his field of engineering and the specific project. The freelancers sidestep all the baggage of office life and relish their freedom of timings and the personal touch imparted to their job by the act of freelancing.
The companies on the other hand, strike deals at rates lower than corporate engineering firms and get almost as good service from the freelance engineers. The interaction between these two parties occur primarily through ads in papers, or more recently, via internet forums which provide a platform for companies to put up their projects and for freelance engineers to apply to them as per their wish. Even though this breeds a lot of competition amongst the freelancers, freelance engineers are a tough breed who has been persisting in a cutthroat market of other freelancers as well as corporate engineering firms.
However, freelancing is not as romantic as it may sound at first - freelancers have to bear the brunt of financial downturns, such as the one last year. Furthermore, a well-established company say something like Shell, might pay huge, obscene amounts to its top engineers, which might make one, think twice before leaving a top company for a freelance engineering career. Also, in freelancing one has to be always on one's toes, as projects do not just drop on your lap, you have to go and get them. Only by selecting smartly and wisely can freelance engineers hope to carve a notable career for themselves.
Freelancing, particularly in engineering, has several visible shortcomings at the outset - but any freelancer could tell you that they would never give up their freedom, and the liberty to work at will, for all the money in the world. It is this different set of priorities that make freelance engineers take the path that they take.
With the growing acceptance of freelance jobs as a career, it is no longer restricted to a particular industry or vocation. It is not uncommon to find freelance engineering jobs or consulting jobs on offer in the market today
