What to Wear to Work - Maintaining a Professional Image As a Woman

What you wear to work has a direct impact on your professional image at the office. The phrase, "dress for success," should become your directive each day as you begin to get dressed. Most companies have dress codes in place for their employees. If you're unsure of the dress code, your best bet is to study what your female boss is wearing and try to pick similar outfits to wear. You will never go wrong following this tip.
As a general guideline, you should avoid skimpy skirts, too many accessories, heavy make-up, and showing too much skin. The lengths of skirts should be no more than one inch above the knee. When you're selecting a skirt to wear to work, you should practice wearing it and doing things in it that you would normally do during the day to determine if it's too short. This would include sitting down, bending over, picking things up, and reaching for items above your head. If you perform these actions in front of a mirror, you will be able to judge how high your skirt will rise when you do these same actions at work.
Be sure to keep your accessories to a minimum. Avoid wearing stacks of metal bangles as this can be a distraction to your colleagues. Also, wear earrings that are less than an inch in length or width. Longer or wider earrings will tarnish a professional image. It's best not to join in fashion trends, such as wearing more than one watch. Save that chic look for the weekend.
What you finally decide to wear to work should not reveal too much skin. Low-cut front or back shirts and dresses are inappropriate work attire. Also, cut-outs, cut-offs, and see-through items of any kind should be avoided. Try to wear conservative necklines to avoid distracting other employees and also to avoid getting negative attention.
Now that you have selected an appropriate ensemble to wear to work that meets the general guidelines, turn your attention to your makeup. Your makeup should be as neutral and day-time friendly as possible. Avoid excessive use of bronzers, shimmery shadows, and glosses. Do not apply your makeup with a heavy hand. Less is always more in a working environment when it comes to makeup.
Lastly, remember that when you're dressed appropriately and feeling comfortable, you'll work better and have greater confidence.
